The Waters XTerra Shield RP18 HPLC-/UHPLC column 250x4.6mm, 3.5µm, is based on HPT hybrid particles and features an embedded polar group in an octadecylsilyl phase (other designations: ODS, RP-18, C18). The Waters XTerra Shield RP18 is used in reversed-phase chromatography. The Shield surface improves peak shapes for basic analytes and provides a different selectivity than linear alkyl phases. The application range of the Waters XTerra Shield RP18 includes basic active substances, methods near neutral pH, 100% aqueous conditions and RP method screening.
XTerra is part of the first generation of Waters Hybrid Particle Technology. The organic-inorganic particle matrix is more resistant to alkaline hydrolysis than conventional silica and therefore allows for an expanded pH operating range. In addition to classic RP18 and RP8 phases, the series offers MS variants with low column bleed as well as Shield phases with embedded polar groups. XTerra is particularly relevant for existing methods where the original hybrid selectivity and historical method compatibility must be maintained.
