The Waters Spherisorb C8 HPLC column 250x10mm, 5µm, is built on an octylsilyl phase (other designations: RP-8, C8) on spherical silica and is suitable for RP-HPLC methods. The phase provides a classic RP selectivity with lower retention than ODS or C18 phases. Compared with C18 phases, the Waters Spherisorb C8 shows lower hydrophobic retention, allowing very hydrophobic compounds to elute faster. Typical applications of the Waters Spherisorb C8 include very hydrophobic compounds, shorter RP methods, drug screening and method transfer.
The Spherisorb series is based on mechanically robust silica with a pore size of 80 Å and is available in several particle sizes. ODS1 has a lower ligand density and lower carbon loading, while ODS2 offers a more densely packed, end-capped C18 surface. The series is complemented by short alkyl chains, cyano, phenyl, amino, and silica phases, as well as strong anion- and cation-exchange phases. This allows for the coverage of a wide range of classical HPLC methods using a silica base that is consistent across the product family.
