The Benson BP-800 Pb HPLC column (300 × 7.8 mm, 9 µm) utilises a more highly cross-linked PS/DVB polymer matrix in lead form. Benson BP-800 Pb is designed for sugar analyses requiring high selectivity for mono- and disaccharides or sugar alcohols. The combination of 8% cross-linking and the Pb counterion provides different separation behaviour to the BP-100 Pb and may be of interest for more compact or robust methods. Typical applications for the Benson BP-800 Pb column include food samples, syrups, starch degradation products and fermentation matrices.
Benson columns are based on sulfonated styrene-divinylbenzene polymers with various counterions and degrees of cross-linking. The BP-100 series is typically associated with 6% cross-linking, while the BP-700 and BP-800 series represent more highly cross-linked variants designed for different selectivity and robustness requirements. Depending on the counterion, sugars, sugar alcohols, organic acids, or alcoholic byproducts are separated. Calcium, lead, sodium, potassium, and silver forms are primarily used for carbohydrates; H forms are typically used for organic acids, fermentation products, and related ion-exclusion chromatography applications.
Benson is a brand name of the manufacturer Concise Separations, San Jose, USA.
