The Inertsil TMS HPLC column 125x4.6mm, 5µm, is modified with trimethylsilyl groups and corresponds to a weakly hydrophobic C1 phase for reverse-phase chromatography. Inertsil TMS offers significantly lower retention than C8 or C18 phases and can be used when highly hydrophobic analytes need to be eluted more quickly or analyzed with alternative selectivity. The TMS modification is not end-capped and is classified as a USP L13 phase. Typical applications include methods with highly nonpolar components, fast RP separations, method comparisons with longer-chain alkyl phases, and established pharmacopoeial or routine procedures that require C1 selectivity.
The Inertsil series is based on a high-purity, spherical silica matrix whose pore structure, particle size distribution, and surface are carefully controlled during production. Low metal contamination and careful surface treatment reduce the activity of free silanol groups. This minimizes undesirable secondary interactions—particularly tailing and adsorption with basic or chelating analytes—and promotes stable retention times. This reproducible silica matrix forms the basis for the various Inertsil modifications and ensures reliable selectivities across the series. Appropriate Inertsil pre-column cartridges should be used to protect the analytical packing bed from particles and the sample matrix and to extend column lifespan.
