The Waters SunFire C8 HPLC/UHPLC column 50x4.6mm, 5µm, is based on an octylsilyl phase (other designations: RP-8, C8) on high-purity, spherical silica and is used primarily in reversed-phase chromatography. The C8 chemistry offers low backpressure, good efficiency and lower retention compared with SunFire C18. Compared with C18 phases, the Waters SunFire C8 exhibits lower hydrophobic retention, allowing highly hydrophobic compounds to be eluted more rapidly.Applications of the Waters SunFire C8 include highly hydrophobic active substances, fast RP methods, LC–MS analytics and methods where C18 retains too strongly.
SunFire packing materials are manufactured from fully porous, high-purity silica with a pore size of 100 Å. The combination of silica synthesis, bonding chemistry, end-capping, and controlled packing is designed to ensure high efficiency, low column bleeding, and good stability under acidic conditions. C18 and C8 differ primarily in their hydrophobic retention, while SunFire Silica is used for adsorptive normal-phase separations. The product family includes both analytical and OBD preparative columns, thereby supporting method scale-up.
