The Waters Symmetry C8 HPLC column 20x3.9mm, 3.5µm, is based on an octylsilyl phase (other designations: RP-8, C8) on high-purity silica and is used primarily in reversed-phase chromatography. The C8 phase offers general RP selectivity with shorter retention than Symmetry C18. Compared with C18 phases, Waters Symmetry C8 exhibits lower hydrophobic retention, allowing very hydrophobic compounds to elute more quickly.Applications of Waters Symmetry C8 include faster routine analysis, very hydrophobic analytes, pharmaceutical methods and method optimisation.
Symmetry is based on high-purity silica and strictly controlled manufacturing and packing specifications. The classic C18 and C8 phases are designed to minimize unwanted silanol interactions and ensure reproducible peak shapes. In SymmetryShield, a polar group is embedded in the alkyl phase, which alters the selectivity and behavior of basic analytes compared to conventional alkyl phases. Symmetry300 uses a wide-pore 300 Å silica and extends the series to peptides, proteins, and other larger biomolecules.
