The Benson BP-100 Ca HPLC column (300 × 7.8 mm, 9 µm) is based on a sulphonated styrene-divinylbenzene polymer in the calcium form. Benson BP-100 Ca is used for carbohydrate and sugar alcohol separations, in which calcium, as the counterion, influences selectivity via ligand exchange and size effects. Due to the moderate degree of cross-linking in the BP-100 series, this phase is suitable for aqueous methods and isocratic separation conditions. Typical applications of the Benson BP-100 Ca column include sugar profiles, sweeteners, fermentation samples and food matrices.
Benson columns are based on sulfonated styrene-divinylbenzene polymers with various counterions and degrees of cross-linking. The BP-100 series is typically associated with 6% cross-linking, while the BP-700 and BP-800 series represent more highly cross-linked variants designed for different selectivity and robustness requirements. Depending on the counterion, sugars, sugar alcohols, organic acids, or alcoholic byproducts are separated. Calcium, lead, sodium, potassium, and silver forms are primarily used for carbohydrates; H forms are typically used for organic acids, fermentation products, and related ion-exclusion chromatography applications.
Benson is a brand name of the manufacturer Concise Separations, San Jose, USA.
