The Inertsil C8-4 HPLC column 100x2.1mm, 2µm, is based on an octyl phase (also known as RP-8, C8) for reverse-phase chromatography. Compared to C18 phases, the C8 phase exhibits lower hydrophobic retention, which shortens run times and allows highly hydrophobic analytes to be eluted more easily. Inertsil C8-4 is designed as a modern, highly inert C8 phase for robust routine methods. Typical applications include pharmaceutical analysis, food and environmental analysis, method acceleration, and separations in which C18 phases result in excessive retention.
The Inertsil series is based on a high-purity, spherical silica matrix whose pore structure, particle size distribution, and surface are carefully controlled during production. Low metal contamination and careful surface treatment reduce the activity of free silanol groups. This minimizes undesirable secondary interactions—particularly tailing and adsorption with basic or chelating analytes—and promotes stable retention times. This reproducible silica matrix forms the basis for the various Inertsil modifications and ensures reliable selectivities across the series. Appropriate Inertsil pre-column cartridges should be used to protect the analytical packing bed from particles and the sample matrix and to extend column lifespan.
