The Inertsil Ph HPLC column 250x4.6mm, 5µm, is based on phenethyl groups bonded to the silica. This phenylalkyl structure combines weak π-π interactions with hydrophobic interactions from the alkyl chain, thereby providing a phenyl selectivity that is closer to that of conventional phenyl phases than Inertsil Ph-3. Inertsil Ph is used in reverse-phase chromatography. Typical applications include aromatic compounds, pharmaceutical analytes, method comparisons, structural isomers, and separations where moderate phenyl selectivity is desired.
The Inertsil series is based on a high-purity, spherical silica matrix whose pore structure, particle size distribution, and surface are carefully controlled during production. Low metal contamination and careful surface treatment reduce the activity of free silanol groups. This minimizes undesirable secondary interactions—particularly tailing and adsorption with basic or chelating analytes—and promotes stable retention times. This reproducible silica matrix forms the basis for the various Inertsil modifications and ensures reliable selectivities across the series. Appropriate Inertsil pre-column cartridges should be used to protect the analytical packing bed from particles and the sample matrix and to extend column lifespan.
