The Inertsil ODS-2 HPLC column 250x4.6mm, 5µm, is a well-established octadecyl phase (also known as ODS, RP-18, C18) for reverse-phase chromatography. The phase is based on high-purity silica with a larger pore size and was developed to produce symmetrical peaks for acidic and basic compounds as well as to operate at low backpressure. Inertsil ODS-2 is particularly relevant for existing methods that were historically developed based on this selectivity. Typical applications include routine pharmaceutical analysis, environmental analysis, classical RP-HPLC methods, and method maintenance in regulated laboratories.
The Inertsil series is based on a high-purity, spherical silica matrix whose pore structure, particle size distribution, and surface are carefully controlled during production. Low metal contamination and careful surface treatment reduce the activity of free silanol groups. This minimizes undesirable secondary interactions—particularly tailing and adsorption with basic or chelating analytes—and promotes stable retention times. This reproducible silica matrix forms the basis for the various Inertsil modifications and ensures reliable selectivities across the series. Appropriate Inertsil pre-column cartridges should be used to protect the analytical packing bed from particles and the sample matrix and to extend column lifespan.
