Product Description

The Chiralcel OC HPLC column 150x4.6mm, 20µm, based on cellulose as the polysaccharide backbone. The specific modification used is cellulose tris(phenylcarbamate); the chiral stationary phase is physically coated and applied to spherical silica. Chiralcel OC is primarily used in normal-phase chromatography and separates enantiomers via hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole interactions, π-π interactions and steric fit. Typical applications of Chiralcel OC include substances containing hydrogen-bond acceptors or donors, aromatic compounds and chiral synthetic building blocks. The unsubstituted phenylcarbamate structure makes Chiralcel OC a classic cellulose-based selectant.

Features and Benefits

  • Cellulose-based chiral polysaccharide phases with established enantioselectivity
  • Coated Chiralcel phases on spherical silica with proven selectivity
  • Wide range of applications in normal-phase HPLC, SFC, and available RP variants
  • Complementary modifications for screening, method optimization, and preparative separations

Additional Notes

The Chiralcel phases are based on cellulose-derived polysaccharides that are physically coated onto a silica scaffold to serve as chiral selectors. The cellulose structure creates an ordered, chiral environment, while the specific derivatization—for example, phenylcarbamate, benzoate, acetate, or cinnamate—determines the specific hydrogen-bond, dipole, π-π, and hydrophobic interactions. The advantage of the coated Chiralcel phases lies in their very broad, proven selectivity and often good loading capacity, particularly for preparative separations. The disadvantage is limited solvent compatibility: highly solvent organic solvents can impair the physically applied polysaccharide layer. For a robust method, Chiralcel pre-column cartridges with a suitable phase should be used, as chiral polysaccharide phases can be sensitive to matrix components, particles, and strongly adsorbing sample components.
